Use creative thinking to grow your business.

Why is creative thinking important to business? Especially small business?

After all, business is about numbers, sales projections, customer service, and tangible things like that which can be felt and touched. Right?

creative thinking

Well, yes…and no.

Numbers and sales figures are incredibly important to business growth. But so is creativity.

Because creativity spurs innovation. Innovation drives progress. And innovation grows business.

Think about Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. We are constantly amazed by the newest i-thingy or Microsoft product. Think about all the wonders we’ve seen in the last 50 years. The remote control, man walking on the moon, personal computers, microwave ovens, communication satellites, the internet…I can’t even begin to list them all.

The point is, these inventions transformed our world…and built companies and fortunes.

And all started with an idea born of being creative.

Tapping into your creative side.

That’s why this section is about tapping into your creative resources. Because believe it or not, we are all creative. We were born that way. Seriously, we were.

Think about it. Remember as a child how a cardboard box became a shining castle, and the oak tree in the front yard transformed itself into a dragon ready to be slain?

creative ideas

Remember how we could play “pretend” and “what if” games all day long?

That was creative thinking.

Remember laying on your back and staring up at the clouds and imagining dinosaurs and magic kingdoms?

Creative thinking.

Of course, as we grow our imaginations become more structured and we lose some (or a lot) of the courage and curiosity that fuels creativity.

But the good news is that our creative selves are still in there, waiting to come enrich our lives and our businesses.

So what is creative thinking and how can you tap into it? Simply defined, it's the ability to imagine or invent something new.

Thinking creatively is a willingness to think beyond what is and envision what could be.

Not all creativity leads to the kind of innovations that can send man to the moon. And that’s okay - we need more small, but brilliant ideas. Because small innovations are how most people will grow their companies. Things like how to put a new spin on an old product. Or how to present your service in a new and exciting way.

Creative thinking leads to creative business solutions which leads to business growth.

If you’d like to learn how to increase creativity in the workplace, you’ll want to check out my articles on "Got Creativity in the Workplace?,” and “Creative Thinking and the Art of Living and Working.”

If you'd like to read about some "Creative Thinking Zappers," click here.

I'll be adding articles regularly, so be sure to check back often.

Another resource you need to check out is Brainstorming-That-Works.com. It's a terrific site filled with great new ideas and information on creativity that every business needs to know to stay vibrant and continue to grow.

But beware…creative thinking is addictive. Especially after you see what the results can be.

As Grapes of Wrath author, John Steinbeck, said, “Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you have a dozen.”
